the cemetery of the nameless - a brief history

the cemetery is located in the southeast of vienna near the alberner haven. in 1854 the first corpse were burried there. since that the whirlpool at this point of the danube washed more and more bodies ashore.

478 victims of the dark blue floods were burried there until 1900. as the level of the dams were raised, a new cemetery was founded behind the dam-lines and another 108 were burried there.

most of the corpses found could not be identified as they were too much decayed already or they simply were strangers not known by anyone. so that's how the cemetery got it's name. - the few crosses with inscription are telling tragic stories. children drowned by strangers, a girl - 18 years old - which committed suicide (maybe because of an unreturned love?).

as granaries were built there 1939 the tide changed and no more bodies were found. the last funeral were held there in 1940.
